HTTP Proxy Basics
HTTP proxies understand web protocols (HTTP/HTTPS). They can read and modify web requests, cache content, and filter websites. They're designed specifically for web browsing and work well for accessing websites.
SOCKS5 Basics
SOCKS5 is a lower-level protocol that handles any type of traffic — web, email, gaming, streaming, torrents. It doesn't understand web protocols, so it can't cache or filter. But it's more versatile and supports UDP for real-time applications.
Performance Differences
HTTP proxies can be faster for web browsing because they understand and optimize HTTP requests. SOCKS5 adds minimal overhead but doesn't optimize. For general web use, HTTP is fine. For gaming, streaming, or P2P, SOCKS5 is better.
Security Comparison
Neither protocol encrypts by itself — both require additional configuration. SOCKS5 is harder to block because it doesn't have identifiable HTTP headers. HTTP proxies are easier to detect and block by network administrators.
When to Use Each
Use HTTP proxy for: web browsing, content filtering, caching, and corporate environments. Use SOCKS5 for: gaming, streaming, torrents, applications beyond the browser, and when you need protocol flexibility.
